I’ve been working as a front-end engineer for almost three years, always in teams with designers. Even before transitioning to tech, I had designers on my team when I worked in marketing. And a few years ago, I also started exploring Figma, and I thought it would be great to learn more and practice to improve my design skills. That’s how I decided to create a hero section every day.
So yeah, every day in May I opened ChatGPT, asked it to generate info for a fictional business, and then opened Figma to design a hero section. I spent anywhere from 1 to 6 hours on each design. Sometimes it was extremely easy; other times I struggled with composition, color palette, or both.
Looking back, I see that some ideas turned out really well, while others I’m not proud of and would like to change. But that’s actually a good feeling — it means I’ve grown during this period, which is great.
Overall, it’s a bit easier than working in real life. Since I’m the one making all the decisions, I can make compromises or choose styles I really want to try. When I work with clients, they’re usually the ones making the final call, and that’s when things get complicated. But when you’re working alone on your own ideas, it’s so much easier.
