Trust people, not ratings

I remember it like it was yesterday, but it happened many years ago. I told my friend about a movie I watched last weekend and suggested to check it out too. He immediately grabbed his phone, opened IMDB, and said, “Hmm, I think I’ll skip it. It only has a 6 out of 10.” I was stunned. And the more it happened — when others dismissed my recommendations for movies, books, or albums because of some random rating — the more frustrated I became.

Maybe you think I just have shitty friends, but honestly, it seems like a lot of people are like this. A 2018 study found that 63% of U.S. adults rely heavily on online reviews. So basically, people are forming their opinions based on strangers they’ve never met.

I find this disgusting.

Of course, your friends won’t always recommend great movies, books, or music. And even if they do, it doesn’t mean you’ll like them. But trying something suggested by someone you know creates a connection. It opens the door to meaningful conversations, where you can agree, disagree, and share your own recommendations in return.

So please, stop blindly trusting critics and ratings. The opinions of real people — the ones you care about — are worth so much more.
